If you want to go on an exciting and unique vacation, why not visit the Doorway to Hell? The Darvaza Gas Crater in Turkmenistan is believed by locals to be the portal to Hell – or at least a great way to make some tourist money. The must-see site is a gas crater that has been flaming for nearly 37 years. The giant, fiery hole in the ground is sure to be a site you won’t forget for years to come.
The greatest coincidence is the place’s name “Darvaza” which means “Door” in hindi language which is spoken far away from this place in Indian subcontinent. And the name for this place was kept much before the ‘door to hell’ came into existence.
Origin of Doorway to Hell
Turkmenistan was formerly part of Soviet Russia in the 70s, but became a sovereign country in the early 90s. The crater was formed when a drilling exercise went horribly wrong, leaving a giant crater filled with poisonous gas. The concentration of gasses was so high that nobody could go into the hole. Fortunately, a brilliant laborer had the idea to simply light the gasses on fire and the Doorway to Hell was born.
As it turns out, lighting the hole on fire wasn’t such a great idea. The crater has a huge supply of natural gas that has been continuously burning for over 3 decades. Nobody knows how much more gas there is in the hole, so visit the Doorway to Hell while it’s still burning and try not to cringe when you think of all the natural resources being wasted.
