Since the day we start to understand this world, we are taught to be a “Good” Person and always do the “Right” Thing. Now there’s one question that very few ask : Who sets the definition of being “Good” or being “Right” ? At one point of time, it was a human or a group of humans or a society of humans who decided what is “Good” and what is “Right”. As a child, we are taught to be a good student and secure good marks in every exam. If what’s good is what they say is good, then why is that most of rich and famous people in our world were not good students in their schools and colleges. They didn’t come first in their class or won a gold medal in studies but still they are living a far better life than “Good” students. Why do we let people make rules for us while we are capable of making our own rules ? Why do we let others restrict us in the rules we never made. We were not even consulted when they were setting the definitions of being “Right” or being “Good” yet we blindly follow their rules like some prisoners. All of these questions bring us to our main question. Why do we prefer a life of security over a life of freedom ?
The answer lies within the very nature of human beings which is primarily based on two things :
The fear of rejection(or failure) and The feeling of security.
Let me tell you a very interesting story that will open up your mind. Once upon a time there were 5 men stranded in a desert with no food and water, they were going to die when they found a wizard. They begged him to save their lives. He did some magic and provided small amount of food and water to all 5 of them. “Please show us a way out of this desert” one of the 5 men requested the wizard. The wizard told them they were destined to die in the desert. So he said : “You are all going to die in 100 days from now, but through my magic I can provide you all some basic necessities for this time period. I’ll provide you with some shade, a little food and water for every day so that you‘ll live for 100 days.” They all accepted the favour of the wizard and thanked him. While he was about to disappear he said “There’s one more way for you all to live better these 100 days. If any of you wants a fully furnished house with all amenities, ample amount of water, tasty food and all pleasures of life, you can continue your travel in southeast direction. If you find that house, rest 90 days of your life would be great !! But the journey is of 10 days and there’s a 30 % chance that you’ll be able to find that house. It is risky because I can provide only 3 days of food and water for the journey and you can die miserably in desert in 10 days. So all 5 men started to think and reasonably they found the present scenario better, so they said “Please provide us for food, water and shade here and we would like to stay here for 100 days which is certain”. “Ok, as you wish”, said the wizard. When he was about to leave, one of the 5 men shouted, “Wait !! I want to find that house, I’ll travel in southeast direction, please provide me with 3 days of food and water”. So the wizard did as requested. He provided him with 3 days of food and water and other 4 men a magic plate and glass which will present some amount of food and water daily if they stay at the same place, plus they got a good shade from sun while the 5th man continued his journey to find the better house. In 10 days, the travelling man faced with a lot of challenges, he starved, he got thirsty for water, scorching sun took a toll upon him but while he was about to die on 10th day, he saw a nice house, then another one and a lot of other houses as well. As he advanced, the wizard appeared in front of him and asked, why didn’t you stay with all other men, you could have been killed, why you took so much risk when you knew you were about to live only 100 days. So he said “It not the days that count for me, it’s how I spend them. I refuse to live an ordinary life while I have the slightest possibility to live the way I want to. Even 1 day of this house would be worth 100 in that desert. I’ll rather die trying to find the life that I want instead of living a forced one. ” So the wizard said “Go on, you deserve the house. But I’ll recommend you go to your own house because you are out of desert. This is a village outside the desert. I gave you all the directions to go out of the desert, not to a better house. I just wanted to see if you guys had enough thirst in you to just survive or to live the life you want. Only you deserve to live your life because you chose your own path, a tough one that could lead you to your destination or to your death, not the easy secure one which would have given you an ordinary life. Only you deserved to get out of that desert and here you are !! ” said the wizard and disappeared in thin air. The man took help from villagers and reached his own home in 5 days. He spent rest of his 85 days happily with his family making memories of an entire lifetime whereas the other 4 guys spend their lives in desert and died with no will to live anymore.
So how the story connects to every human soul on this earth ? It simply gives you the rules of life. If you want a life of your dreams, then you’ll have to take risks, you’ll have to wash out the feeling of security from your mind and you’ll have to bend rules made by others. The wizard symbolizes god and the men symbolizes all humans in this world. God has provided us with both the reward and opportunities. The fearless ones that grab the opportunity or create one for themselves and have the courage to walk on that path are the ones worthy of rewards. That’s the simplest way to choose some privileged ones over others in a perfect world.
So the bottom line rule is : If you want to live a life of your choice, you’ll have to work hard for it. You’ll have to take initiatives, risks and even failures right on your face but if your thirst for the life of your choice is bigger than the problems in your path, you will surely win. On the other hand, if you choose to live an ordinary life just because it’s more secure, your life has no meaning. You are no better than wild animals which hunt for food and that’s pretty much they do their entire life without influencing a single leaf or leaving any imprints that they existed.
So have faith that your persistence will pay off one day. Don’t be scared to take risks as long as they pushes you in right direction. Between the Life of Security and Life of Freedom, choose the Life of Freedom which is actually worth living !!
