Miyakejima : Town where everyone wears a gas mask

Can you imagine wearing a gas mask all the time. Wearing it while walking, talking and even cycling. MiyakeJima is a small island located on the southeast of Honshū, Japan where everyone wears a gas mask all the time. And this is not the end of it, people even get married in gas masks (which is hilarious). But trust me it’s not funny besides looking like a monkey all the time. The reason for this is the main volcano in the island which has erupted many times and the crater is actively releasing poisonous gases into the air all the time.
This is a photo of a wedding in Miyakejima. Cute…Isn’t it !! The groom almost look like a psycho killer. The smell of rotten eggs will greet you when you arrive and this is due to the sulphur that is constantly being spread in the air. It would be hard to label this location as a great tourist spot due to such a hazardous environment but there are plenty of adventurous people who travel to Miyakejima every year. Adventurous people do a lot of crazy stuff and sometimes they get themselves killed for it, again funny (may be not this time !!)
There have been times when the island has been evacuated completely and there is a good chance it will continue to happen due to this evil volcano. The locals have gotten used to this but tourists should be warned that things can easily turn ugly due to natural causes. There is no cause for concern as far as interacting with the locals. They are peaceful people and welcome tourists with open arms, and trust me their arms are not rotten..:) Your fight in this island is entirely against nature and for the most part it will be an attack on your sense of smell.
There is basically no way to escape this smell and even when you don’t have to wear your gas mask, you will probably have to deal with a moldy humid smell because most buildings and rooms avoid external ventilation to keep the horrible smell of rotten eggs from coming into the rooms and just opening a door for a few seconds can mean the difference between a night of rotten egg smell or a night of wet old clothes smell. You are stuck between a rock and hard place but most people will take humid and moldy smell over the sulphur anytime (such pretentious as$h0les). Well there’s not much to talk about it but if you are excited enough (with a case of really bad cold and you nose is stuffed badly), you can visit this strange place.
